When a Tree Should Come Down
Tree removal in McKinney usually comes down to one of four reasons: the tree is dead or dying, it has a structural defect that can't be pruned out, it is growing into the house or foundation area, or it is the wrong tree for the spot. Most of the removals we price here are on fenced suburban lots, where the tree is 25 to 50 feet tall, the gate is four feet wide and there is a pool, a roof or a neighbor's fence under it.
Signs a tree may need to go
- Dead wood over a third or more of the crown, or no leaves in late spring.
- A new or increasing lean with soil cracking or heaving on the opposite side.
- Fungus or mushrooms at the base, or soft, hollow wood at the root flare.
- A long split down from a fork, common in Bradford pears.
- An ash tree with dieback at the top, bark splits and woodpecker damage, now that emerald ash borer is in Collin County.
- Trunks or roots lifting a slab, driveway or pool deck.
How a removal works on a tight lot
If there is open room, a tree can be notched and felled in one piece. On most McKinney backyards there isn't, so the tree is climbed or reached from a lift and taken down in sections, with heavier pieces lowered on ropes instead of dropped. When a tree is very large, leans over a house or is too weak to climb, a crane is sometimes the safest way to lift it out piece by piece. Clay soil matters too: after heavy rain, equipment can rut a lawn badly, so we may wait a few days or lay down ground mats.
Permits and HOA approval
McKinney protects quality trees, including oaks and pecans, from 6 to 41 inches in diameter, and any tree 42 inches or larger, under its tree preservation ordinance. A healthy protected tree may need a city tree permit before it comes down; the city's checklist lists a $0 fee for residential removals at an existing home. Texas law keeps cities from blocking the removal of a dead or diseased tree, or one that poses an imminent threat. Many HOAs also require approval for front-yard trees and may require a replacement tree. We note on the quote anything that needs a permit or approval first.
What Tree Removal Covers
Each removal is priced for the specific tree and the specific yard.
Sectional removal
Climbing or lift work that takes the tree down in pieces, lowering heavy wood on ropes over fences, pools and roofs.
Dead and hazard trees
Trees with decay, splits or dieback removed before they fail, with extra care because dead wood breaks unpredictably.
Ash removal
Declining ash removed and the wood chipped or kept local, following the emerald ash borer quarantine on Collin County.
Crane-assisted removal
For very large trees or trees leaning over houses, a crane is sometimes used to lift sections clear of the structure.
Stump grinding add-on
The stump ground below grade the same day, with grindings left to fill the hole or hauled away.
Wood and brush handling
Logs cut to firewood length or hauled, brush chipped, and the chips left as mulch or taken with us.

How a Removal Goes
1. Look at the tree and the yard
We check the tree's condition and lean, what it could hit, the gate width, the alley, overhead lines and where the wood can go.
2. Check permits and approvals
If the tree may be protected under McKinney's ordinance or needs HOA approval, we say so and explain what to submit.
3. Itemized quote
Each tree, the method, cleanup, stump grinding if wanted, and the price. Nothing starts until you approve it.
4. Removal day
The work area is set up, the tree is felled or taken down in sections, and heavy pieces are lowered on ropes where needed.
5. Leave it tidy
Brush is chipped, wood is cut or hauled as agreed, the lawn is raked and blown off, and the stump is ground if it was on the quote.

Why Choose Us for Tree Removal
Method chosen for the yard
Felling, sectional removal or a crane: the quote explains which one and why.
Hauling included unless you say otherwise
The city won't collect contractor-cut limbs, so we plan for the wood from the start.
Ash wood handled correctly
Ash is chipped or left local so the borer does not travel.
Tree Removal Questions
How long does a tree removal take?
Most single-tree removals on a residential lot take a few hours to a day. A large tree in a fenced backyard that has to come down in sections, or a removal that needs a crane, takes longer. The quote gives an expected time on site.
Do you remove the stump too?
Only if you want it. Stump grinding is priced as its own line on the quote so you can decide. Some homeowners leave a stump cut low and flush for now and grind it later.
Will removing a tree damage my lawn?
Some wear is normal where wood is dragged or equipment runs. On McKinney clay, the bigger risk is ruts after rain, so we may reschedule or use ground protection when the soil is soaked.
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Usually only when a tree falls on a covered structure because of a covered event, such as a windstorm. Removing a healthy or dead tree that hasn't damaged anything is normally the owner's cost. Check your policy and take photos before any cleanup.
Can a tree be removed from the backyard if there's no alley access?
Yes. Wood can be carried or rolled out through a gate in small pieces, or lifted over the house with a crane when a tree is too large to bring through the side yard. The method changes the price, which is why we look at access during the estimate.
