Lavon, Below the Dam
Lavon sits about a mile southeast of Lavon Dam, and much of the Tree Service we do here is for owners of newer homes on former farmland near the lake. The city had 387 residents in 2000, 2,219 in 2010 and 4,469 in 2020, and the 2025 estimate listed on its Wikipedia page is 11,888. At about 518 feet, it is also some of the lowest ground in this part of Collin County.
The lake next door
Lavon Dam impounds the East Fork of the Trinity River to form Lavon Lake, a 21,400-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir completed in 1953 for flood control and later for water supply and recreation. The North Texas Municipal Water District holds rights to its conservation pool. For trees, being near the lake mostly means lower, wetter ground in places and open exposure to wind coming across the water. Trees on low spots or near drainage channels sit in soil that stays saturated after heavy rain, which is exactly when a tree with a weak root system tips.
Young trees in new neighborhoods
Most of Lavon's homes are recent, and most of its trees were planted with them. That is good news, because young trees are cheap to shape. A few habits make a big difference:
- Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk so the root flare stays visible
- Remove nursery stakes after the first year
- Water deeply every week or two in summer drought instead of a little every day
- Have competing leaders and narrow forks pruned early, while the cuts are small
- Do not plant large-growing trees under overhead lines or within a few feet of the foundation
We are glad to do a quick structural pruning on young trees, and it is usually one of the smallest jobs we price.
Older trees on the edges
Where fields met creeks or fences, older hackberries, elms and cedars remain. Some were left in backyards when subdivisions were built and have since declined from root loss. Others line the edges of remaining open land. These are the trees most likely to drop deadwood or fail in a storm, and they are worth checking each year or two.
Ash and clay
Emerald ash borer was confirmed in Collin County in 2024. If you have an ash, decide on treatment or planned removal now, while it is still healthy enough to choose. The heavy blackland clay around Lavon shrinks and cracks in summer and swells in wet seasons, which is hard on shallow root systems, especially in compacted construction fill.
Stumps and grading
On new lots, stumps from clearing are sometimes left at the property edges or under fence lines. Grinding them below grade lets the ground be leveled and seeded, and we call in utility locates first so buried lines in newer neighborhoods are marked before any grinding starts.

Lavon Questions
My yard stays soggy after rain. Is that bad for my trees?
It can be. Saturated clay reduces oxygen to roots and loosens anchorage, so trees in low spots are more likely to lean or tip in storms. Improving drainage and avoiding extra irrigation helps.
Can you prune a tree that is only a few years old?
Yes, and it is the best time. Removing a competing leader on a young tree is a small cut that heals quickly and prevents a weak fork later.
There is a dead tree behind my fence on open land. Can you remove it?
If it is on your property, yes. If it is on a neighbor's or public land, the owner has to authorize the work. We can talk with the owner or give you a written estimate to share.
Do you grind stumps on new lots?
Yes. We grind stumps and surface roots below grade so the area can be leveled and seeded, after utility locates are marked.
