Van Alstyne on the County Line
Van Alstyne sits mostly in southeastern Grayson County, with its city limits reaching slightly south into Collin County, and Tree Service here covers both an old railroad town and fast-growing edges. Settlers from nearby Mantua founded it in 1873 along the Houston and Texas Central Railway, which also brought the name: Marie Van Alstyne, a Houston socialite and major shareholder in the railroad. The town incorporated in 1890 with about 400 people and counted 4,369 in 2020.
Higher, more open ground
At about 781 feet, Van Alstyne is noticeably higher than McKinney's 577 feet or the land around Lavon Lake. North of the Collin County line the country opens up, and isolated trees on lot edges and along US 75 get the full force of strong winds from passing storms. Trees that grow alone in open ground develop thicker trunks, but they also carry more of the wind load on single limbs. Reducing the length of heavy, horizontal limbs, rather than thinning out the interior, is often the better choice for a lone tree in an exposed yard.
Who runs the lines
Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative, organized in 1937, is headquartered in Van Alstyne and serves rural parts of Grayson and Collin counties around the town. Depending on your address, your lines may belong to the co-op or another utility. Either way, the rule for homeowners is the same: do not prune near overhead lines yourself, and call your utility about lines on the poles. For the service drop to your house, a qualified tree crew can do the work, usually after the utility or your provider arranges a disconnect.
Ash borer in Grayson County
Texas A&M Forest Service lists Grayson County, along with Collin, among the Texas counties with confirmed emerald ash borer. Ash in town yards or windbreaks should be checked. Look for thinning crowns, woodpecker damage that strips patches of outer bark, and vertical bark splits. A healthy, valuable ash can be protected with insecticide. A tree that has already lost much of its crown usually cannot be saved and gets more brittle and dangerous to climb the longer it stands.
Work we do in and around town
- Pruning large shade trees in the original town blocks for roof and line clearance
- Removing dead, storm-split or borer-killed trees
- Clearing fence-row and windbreak trees on acreage outside city limits
- Grinding stumps in lawns; flush-cutting in pasture
- Chipping on site, with chips left for you if you want them
Housing
Van Alstyne had 1,726 housing units and 1,605 households in 2020, with 7.0% of units vacant. Older homes near the center tend to have mature trees close to the house; new homes on the edges have young trees that benefit from structural pruning in their first decade. Windbreaks on acreage outside town deserve a mention. Rows planted decades ago to shelter homes and livestock are now often crowded and partly dead. Removing the failing trees and leaving the healthy ones restores the windbreak without losing it entirely.

Van Alstyne Questions
Do you work in the Grayson County part of Van Alstyne?
Yes. We work across the city on both sides of the county line, and on acreage outside city limits.
Who trims trees near the power lines on my road?
The utility that owns the lines clears its own poles and wires; depending on your address that may be Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative or another provider. Call them about lines on the poles. The service drop to your house is usually handled by a private tree crew after a disconnect.
Is my ash tree dead or just thin?
A thin ash in late summer can be drought stress or emerald ash borer, which is confirmed in Grayson County. Woodpecker damage, bark splits and small D-shaped exit holes point to borers. We can look and tell you whether treatment is still an option.
