What to Do When a Tree Comes Down
Emergency storm tree service in McKinney comes in two seasons: spring and early summer, when thunderstorms bring strong straight-line winds, and winter, when freezing rain coats branches with ice. In May 2013, gusts residents estimated at 60 to 70 mph pulled down branches across the city. In December 2013, ice snapped a tree estimated at 130 years old onto a home on North Coleman Street, breaking through to a bedroom and the kitchen. The February 2021 winter storm left broken limbs in yards across North Texas. These are the calls we sort by danger.
First steps for homeowners
1. Get everyone out of rooms under a tree that is on or against the house. 2. Stay far away from any downed or sagging wires. Assume they are live. Report a tree on a line to Oncor's outage line at 888-313-4747, and call 911 if there are sparks or fire. 3. Take photos of the tree, the damage and the yard before anything is moved, for your insurance claim. 4. Call us at (469) 421-7984 to leave the address, what is down and what it is on. A photo helps us bring the right gear. 5. Don't try to cut a tree that is under tension or resting on the roof. Trunks and limbs pinned under load can spring back with great force when cut.
How storm removals work
A tree resting on a roof is usually removed from the top down: the crown is cut away in small pieces and lowered, then the trunk is lifted or rigged off the roof so it does not drag or fall through. A crane is sometimes the safest way to lift a large trunk off a house. Hanging limbs (hangers) are roped and lowered rather than knocked down. Once the weight is off, the opening can be tarped until a roofer can repair it. Trees that are down in the open yard, across a fence or on the driveway come next.
Trees and power lines after a storm
Oncor removes trees from its lines, and only line-clearance-qualified crews may work near high-voltage lines. Oncor does not remove the fallen tree from your yard afterward; that cleanup is the property owner's. We handle the tree once the line is safe.
Storm Work We Handle
Calls are sorted by risk to people and the house, then by arrival.
Trees on houses and garages
Careful top-down removal so the tree's weight comes off the structure without more damage.
Hanging and broken limbs
Split limbs and hangers caught in the crown roped and lowered before they fall.
Blocked driveways and doors
Cutting a path so you can get cars and people in and out, with full cleanup to follow.
Uprooted and leaning trees
Trees partly tipped over in saturated clay assessed and removed or, rarely, left if they are small and stable.
Fence-line cleanup
Trees and limbs lifted off fences so the fence can be repaired, often in coordination with a neighbor.

Typical Emergency Tree Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Same-day or next-day removal (HomeGuide) | often 2 to 3 times the standard rate |
| Emergency removal, upper end (This Old House) | up to about $5,000 |
| Standard tree 30 to 60 ft, for comparison (HomeGuide) | $500 to $1,500 |
| Hard-to-reach tree, McKinney (homeyou) | up to about $1,200 |
From HomeGuide's tree removal cost guide (February 2026), This Old House (March 2026) and homeyou's McKinney guide (September 2026). Storm work costs more because of risk, rigging and timing. Insurance may cover part of the cost when a tree damages a covered structure. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Storm Call Is Handled
1. You call and send details
Address, what is down, what it is on, whether wires are involved, and a photo if possible.
2. Danger first
Trees on occupied houses and blocked exits come before trees in open yards. Calls involving power lines wait for Oncor.
3. On-site look and quote
We confirm the method and give you a written price before cutting, even in an emergency.
4. Secure the area
Weight off the house, hangers down, driveway open.
5. Finish the cleanup
Remaining wood, brush and stump work completed as agreed, often on a later visit after the urgent work.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions
Who pays when my neighbor's tree falls on my house?
Usually your own homeowners policy covers damage to your house, regardless of whose tree it was, when a storm knocks it down. If the tree was obviously dead and the owner had been told, the insurers may sort out responsibility between them. Call your insurer and take photos first.
Will insurance pay for removing a fallen tree?
Many policies pay to remove a tree that fell on an insured structure, often up to a set limit, and some cover a tree blocking a driveway. A tree that fell in an open yard without hitting anything is often not covered. Your policy and adjuster decide.
Should I cut up a fallen tree myself?
Small limbs in the open, maybe. Anything on the roof, against a wire, under tension or hanging overhead should be left to a tree crew. Spring-back and falling hangers cause many storm-cleanup injuries.
Can the city pick up storm debris?
Residents can bundle limbs they cut themselves under McKinney's yard waste rules, with bundles up to 50 pounds tied with twine. Limbs cut by a contractor are not eligible, so we haul ours.
