Royse City Across Three Counties
Royse City is mainly in Rockwall County but stretches north into Collin County and east into Hunt County, and Tree Service calls here come from all three. The town was settled in 1885 when the railroad came through and is named for G. B. Royse, who platted it and sold the first lots. It counted 13,508 residents in 2020, and its Wikipedia page cites a 2025 estimate of 28,307.
Pest status depends on which side you are on
Texas A&M Forest Service lists both Rockwall and Collin counties among the Texas counties with confirmed emerald ash borer. Hunt County is not on its confirmed list. In practice the beetle does not respect county lines, so any ash in Royse City should be treated as at risk. Planted green and white ash were common in North Texas subdivisions. If you are not sure what your tree is, we will identify it.
What to watch for on an ash:
- Thinning in the upper crown, often starting at the top
- Woodpeckers flaking off outer bark in patches
- Vertical splits in the bark
- Small D-shaped exit holes, about an eighth of an inch across
- Sprouts from the base or lower trunk
A tree with less than about a third of its crown lost may still respond to treatment. Beyond that, planned removal is usually safer and less expensive than waiting.
A growing, owner-occupied town
Census QuickFacts lists Royse City at 83.8% owner-occupied, 3.04 people per household and 26.6% of residents under 18, and notes that 83.3% lived in the same house a year earlier. Much of the town's housing is new, built in subdivisions on former farmland. The trees on those lots are young, and the best thing for them is light structural pruning every couple of years: one central leader, limbs spaced along the trunk, and nothing growing toward the roof or the service line.
Downtown and the older blocks
Royse City was designated a Texas Main Street City in 2007, and older homes near the historic center are where the larger trees tend to be. Those jobs are the ones where careful rigging matters: limbs lowered on ropes over roofs, fences and parked cars, and stumps ground close to sidewalks without damage.
Road and weather
The Missouri, Kansas and Texas line was routed through the area from Greenville to Dallas, and Interstate 30 was built just south of the town in the mid-1960s. Open land along I-30 and the farm country to the north and east give spring storm winds a long run at isolated trees. Shortening long, heavy limbs and removing deadwood before storm season reduces breakage.
Stumps and lawn repair
After a removal, grinding the stump below grade lets you fill with topsoil and seed or sod over it. We can grind surface roots that make mowing difficult, too. Utility locates are requested through Texas 811 before grinding, since newer subdivisions often have shallow service lines in front yards. If you prefer, grindings can be left as mulch for beds rather than hauled away.

Royse City Questions
Is emerald ash borer in Royse City?
Texas A&M Forest Service has confirmed it in Rockwall and Collin counties, which cover most of the city. Hunt County is not on its confirmed list, but the beetle moves, so any ash in town should be checked.
Can you prune the young trees in my new subdivision?
Yes. Structural pruning on trees under ten years old is quick and inexpensive and prevents weak forks and limbs growing into the roof.
Do you remove trees near the older homes downtown?
Yes. Trees close to older houses are usually taken down in sections, with limbs lowered on ropes to protect roofs, fences and walks.
What does a tree estimate include?
Each tree is listed with the work to be done, how debris is handled and whether the stump is ground. The written estimate is the price for that scope.
