Rowlett After the 2015 Tornado

On December 26, 2015, an EF4 tornado came out of Sunnyvale and Garland and tore through the southeast part of Rowlett, severely damaging or destroying hundreds of homes, along with vehicles, businesses and a city water tower. Tree Service in Rowlett still runs into that storm's aftermath. Trees that survived were stripped, twisted and wounded, and many of the replacement trees planted when neighborhoods were rebuilt are now about ten years old and ready for their first serious structural pruning.

Surviving trees, ten years on

A tree that lives through a tornado usually loses part of its crown and often its bark on one side. It responds by pushing out dense clusters of new shoots around the broken ends. A decade later those shoots are limbs, sometimes several inches thick, attached only to the outer layer of wood around an old wound that may have decayed. They look like part of the tree, but they are weakly connected. When we look at a Rowlett survivor tree, we check those regrowth clusters, sound the trunk around old wounds, and decide whether reduction, thinning or removal is the right call.

Replacement trees at age ten

The trees planted after 2015 are at the age where structural pruning matters most. Typical fixes include choosing one leader where two are competing, removing limbs that cross or rub, and starting to raise the canopy over sidewalks and driveways. Cuts on a ten-year-old tree are small and close quickly; the same corrections at age 25 are large wounds.

Living on the lake

Rowlett lies on Lake Ray Hubbard, the 22,745-acre reservoir on the East Fork of the Trinity River that is owned by the City of Dallas and managed by Dallas Water Utilities. Trees along the shoreline lean toward light and water, catch wind coming across open water, and grow in soil that can stay wet. If your yard backs to the lake, any work near the water's edge may also involve the lake's owner. Ask before you cut there.

Brush, bulk and contractor debris

Rowlett's collection, handled by FCC, takes brush and bulky items weekly without a call-in, with items out by 7 a.m. on your trash day; the city asks for a courtesy call and up to a week for pickup. It does not take construction debris generated by a contractor. For tree work, we haul away what we cut, so nothing is left at the curb for FCC to refuse.

Two counties, one pest

Rowlett spans Dallas and Rockwall counties, and Texas A&M Forest Service lists both among Texas counties with confirmed emerald ash borer. Any ash in a Rowlett yard is at risk. Healthy trees can be protected by treatment; declining ones are better removed while the wood is still sound.

Rowlett Questions

My tree survived the 2015 tornado. Should I be worried about it now?

It is worth a look. Regrowth around broken limbs is often weakly attached, and old wounds can decay inside. An inspection tells you whether pruning will correct it or whether removal is safer.

Will FCC pick up the branches after my trees are trimmed?

Rowlett's collection excludes debris generated by a contractor, so when we do the work, we haul it. Your own brush can go out on your weekly collection day.

Can you work on trees along the lake?

Yes, on your property. Near the water's edge, check with the lake's owner first if the tree may be on lake property. Lakeside trees often need sectional removal because of slopes and soft ground.

How do I find a tree service near me in Rowlett for a quick limb removal?

Call (469) 421-7984 or use the form. A single broken limb is a small job, and we can usually combine it with any other small items on the same visit.
