Allen Trees and Spring Wind
A lot of the Tree Service work we do in Allen is about wind. On April 9-10, 2008, an EF1 tornado with winds of 90 to 95 mph structurally damaged about 50 homes in the city and left some damage on roughly 300 more. On October 21, 2019, a weaker EF0 with peak winds near 80 mph tracked about 4.8 miles from west Allen into Fairview. Neither was a headline disaster, but both are reminders that a city full of 20- and 30-year-old shade trees sits right in the path of North Texas spring and fall storms.
What the city expects after a storm
Allen's Severe Weather Center puts the responsibility plainly: homeowners, businesses and HOAs clean up trees, limbs and branches that fall on their property. If a tree blocks a road, alley or sidewalk, the city asks you to call its 24-hour hotline at 214.509.4530 so crews can clear the public way. Debris in a city park or on a trail goes through the MyAllen app. The city also notes that contractors have to haul off what they cut, including trees and limbs. So when we quote storm work here, the haul-off is part of the price, not an extra you discover later.
How CWD handles brush you cut yourself
Community Waste Disposal collects Allen's yard waste. Weekly, it takes up to 7 brush bundles, each no bigger than 4 feet by 2 feet and under 40 pounds, tied with cotton, jute or twine, plus up to 15 paper bags of leaves. Once a month it will take up to 3 cubic yards of loose limbs if you call 972.392.9300, option 2, by noon the day before your scheduled Wednesday. The city's page states that CWD does not collect contractor debris. If you only need a few low limbs off a crape myrtle, doing it yourself and using CWD makes sense. If it is a 40-foot red oak over the roof, that is our job, chips and all.
Pruning that holds up in wind
The trees that fail in Allen storms are rarely the healthy, well-shaped ones. Failures cluster around a few patterns:
- Co-dominant trunks with bark trapped in a tight V, common on Bradford pears and some elms
- Long, heavy limbs extending over roofs with all the foliage at the tips
- Trees planted close to foundations where clay soil and irrigation have kept roots shallow
- Dead branches left in the crown that let go first and break others on the way down
Pruning to ANSI A300 practice removes deadwood, reduces end weight on long leaders and opens the crown so wind passes through. It does not mean topping, which causes weak regrowth and makes the next storm worse.
Creeks and clay
Rowlett Creek and Cottonwood Creek both run through Allen toward Lake Ray Hubbard, and the city sits on Northern Blackland Prairie clay that takes in water slowly. Big trees along greenbelts and backyards that slope toward drainage channels often lean toward the open side, and saturated clay after a multi-day rain loosens their footing. A lean that changes after a storm is worth a call.

Allen Questions
A neighbor's tree fell into my yard in Allen. Who cleans it up?
Allen's guidance is that owners clean up trees and limbs that fall on their property; who pays between neighbors is usually a homeowner's insurance question. If the tree is across a road, alley or sidewalk, call the city's 24-hour line at 214.509.4530 first. We can give both households a written estimate for removal.
Can I leave the trimmed branches out for CWD?
Not if a tree company cut them. The city says CWD does not collect contractor debris, so we haul what we cut. CWD will take your own bundles weekly and up to 3 cubic yards of loose brush a month by appointment.
Is my Bradford pear going to split?
Many do. The species forms tight, narrow forks with bark trapped inside, and those forks tend to fail in wind or ice as the tree matures. Reduction pruning can buy time, but most owners eventually replace them with a sturdier species.
What is the difference between thinning and topping?
Thinning removes selected branches back to their point of origin so the crown keeps its shape and lets wind through. Topping cuts limbs to stubs, which triggers weakly attached sprouts and decay. We follow ANSI A300 practice and do not top trees.
